From 2009 to 2014, the United Nations language staff at all four duty stations and the regional commissions between them provided 811 working days of awareness-raising, master classes, lectures, seminar, workshops, remote coaching and training sessions, participation in examination panels and work with teachers at universities and other training institutions around the world. The Department for General Assembly and Conference Management, which oversees the activities of all the language services of the United Nations Secretariat, would like to expand its outreach to universities. Unfortunately, the resources it can devote to the programme are extremely limited. Activities are therefore carefully targeted. Sometimes they depend on geographical proximity to a staff member’s home leave destination, and priority is usually given to members of the network of universities that have signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations for the training of language professionals. Reports on recent university outreach activities are presented in the e-library and the News section.
