This portal provides information on language careers at the United Nations Secretariat, which has the largest language staff in the United Nations system. The language staff of the Secretariat work in-house at United Nation Headquarters in New York, the United Nations Offices at Geneva, Nairobi and Vienna, and the regional commissions in Addis Ababa, Bangkok, Beirut and Santiago. They are recruited almost exclusively through competitive examinations.
On this website you will find information on:
- The work of the editors, interpreters, terminologists, translators, verbatim reporters, reference assistants, and copy preparers/proofreaders/production editors that make up the Secretariat’s in-house language staff, as well as the qualifications and competencies required
- Tips on preparing for the different United Nations competitive examinations for language professionals
- The language internships offered at different duty stations
- The language outreach programme, including a list of the academic institutions that have formally partnered with the United Nations in the training of language professionals and announcements of upcoming activities and events.
We hope you enjoy your visit.
